Chalk Paint

Interior
Overview

Chalk paint (not to be confused with chalkboard paint) is a thick, matte decorative paint that's very easy to apply — it sticks to almost any surface without priming, sanding, or stripping. It's popular for furniture makeovers because you can paint over existing finish without much prep. The finish is flat and chalky. Always topcoat with wax — chalk paint without wax marks and scratches very easily. Annie Sloan is the original; there are now many imitators at lower price points.

Surface Preparation

Minimal prep is the selling point — clean the surface (degrease if needed), and you can usually apply directly without sanding or priming. For best adhesion on glossy surfaces, scuff lightly with 220.

How to Apply
  • Apply with a stiff brush using random strokes for a textured look, or smooth strokes for more uniformity.
  • Let dry 1 hour.
  • Apply second coat.
  • Optional: distress edges with 150 grit sandpaper before waxing.
  • Apply paste wax and buff — this is required for any durability.
Common Mistakes
  • Not waxing after — chalk paint without protection is nearly useless on anything that gets touched.
  • Expecting it to match the Annie Sloan photos without the same technique — results vary a lot.
  • Using chalk paint for structural or high-wear pieces without understanding its limitations.
